When we’re worried about someone, we may find it difficult to find out what’s wrong. We may worry that we will upset them by asking, or fear we will not know how to help. When we finally ask what’s wrong, we may say well-intended things that bring the conversation to a halt. Throughout our busy schedules, we may even reject a conversation and completely ignore what someone has to say.
If someone is making an effort to speak to us, we should make the effort to actively listen to them. Active listening offers an opportunity for others to talk through their problems. No one expects us to have all the answers, but something as simple as actively listening can help others on the road to recovery.
This week, let’s keep in mind how impactful a listening ear can be. When someone reaches out, let’s avoid responses that try to change their view of their situation or dismiss how they’re feeling. Instead, let’s encourage people to talk through their issues by asking open ended questions and summarizing what they’ve said. Let’s remember to, “love people and use things, because the opposite never works”.
