What can we do when we are overwhelmed by our thoughts or emotions? How can we better respond to situations that are beyond our control?

Even though we cannot fully control our thoughts or emotions, we can improve our response to them. One of the best ways we can cope with overwhelming emotions is by using something that we carry with us everywhere we go: our breath. By taking a few mindful breaths between the intense stressors of the day, while washing dishes, doing laundry, or before that next set at the gym, we can settle our mind and bring ourselves back to the present moment. Appreciating the minute moments can bring calmness into our lives and allow us to become more aware that all emotions eventually pass.

Although reaching out is extremely important, it’s not always easy. Taking a few moments to be mindful of our breath is a tool that we always have at our disposal. So when our thoughts or emotions overwhelm us, let’s try to return to our breath so that we can live more in the present moment. After all, the present moment is the only moment in which we are truly alive and can make changes in our lives and the lives of others.
