What separates fruitless rumination from productive reflection?

As millions of thoughts pass through our mind each day, we tend to label them as good or bad. We either devise a tentative solution and let the distressing thoughts go, or we obsess over the same loop of worry. To come up with a solution requires understanding the root cause of our problems.

However, looking into distressing thoughts is extremely difficult and we sometimes feel like we are completely alone in our struggle. Our cynicism breeds pessimism and soon, we not only focus on the rain cloud, but believe there are even darker ones lurking behind.

We tend to forget that everyone experiences distressing thoughts and therefore, has the potential to show compassion. Reaching out takes courage and we may feel afraid, but as Nelson Mandela said, “Courage is not the absense of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

With a little sunshine from a friend, family member, or stranger, a rainbow may appear. As we are liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others. We are all meant to shine and as we let our own light shine, we enable others to do the same. This positive cycle of helping one another is the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Sincerely,

Daniel Nazareth
